Our campus safety teams are dedicated to making your new campus home safe, secure and interactive. Be sure to explore the opportunities for employment as a Resident Assistant in one of our residence communities.
Windward Commons' exterior doors are equipped with electronic access control so that only residents and appropriate staff can enter. Apartment and bedroom doors are secured by traditional locks.
Cooking with the Cops
University Police hosts cooking and basic kitchen safety classes in Windward Commons. All first-year residents are required to participate in this class prior to using the kitchens in Windward Commons. All residents are welcome to attend.
The Armstrong BLAST emergency notification system will notify students, faculty, and staff through voice and text messages during a campus emergency. Messages can be sent to landline phones, cell phones, and email addresses within minutes. Emergency information will also be posted on the university website. You may update your BLAST contact information through your PORT of Armstrong account.
The apartments, bedrooms, and common areas are equipped with protection systems, including fire alarms and fire sprinklers.
Armstrong performs random fire drills in the residence hall and apartment communities throughout the year. Make sure you evacuate the building whenever you hear the alarm sound.

Residence Life Live-In Staff
Armstrong's residence hall and apartment communities are staffed with Resident Assistants, Graduate Assistants, and live-in professional staff who are trained in emergency response and work closely with our University Police to ensure student's safety. Residence Life staff live in our residential communities to fully emerge themselves in the residential experience, in order to better ensure safety conditions within the housing facilities.
Armstrong does not assume legal or financial obligation for any student's personal property that may be lost or damaged in its buildings or on its grounds (including, but not limited to, failure or interruption of utilities and unforeseen accidents or injuries). Students and/or their parents are encouraged to carry appropriate insurance to cover such losses. Armstrong recommends National Student Services, Inc. or CSI Insurance Agency, Inc.
24/7 Police & Surveillance
University Police Department is a fully empowered law enforcement agency. The main objective of this department is to ensure the safety, peace and tranquility of the academic community and our residence halls. Police officers patrol the campus 24 hours a day. Closed circuit surveillance cameras, monitored by the police department, are located around the residence hall's entrance/exit doors and throughout campus.
Security Outside the Halls
Emergency telephones and exterior lighting are located outside each building, in the residence hall parking lots, and along all of our frequented walkways. Armstrong recommends all residents take safety seriously by being aware of their surroundings, and be very proactive in reporting any suspicious activity. It is always better to over-report than under-report when it comes to safety.
