Pirate Volleyball: Another Night, Another Milestone
With Tuesday (October 25) night's victory at Valdosta State, the No. 16-ranked Pirates stretched their remarkable beginning to the 2011 season to 29 consecutive wins, tying not only the school record set in 1999 but the Peach Belt Conference record as well.
This adds to an already impressive resume fashioned by the Pirates and head coach Will Condon through the first two months of the season. Armstrong has set its new home winning streak at 11, and ascended to its highest national ranking ever by the American Volleyball Coaches' Association (AVCA). Condon, in his fourth year at the helm of the Pirates team, directed Armstrong to a first-ever berth in the NCAA "Elite Eight" in 2008, his first year with the Pirates. But this year's Pirate squad has the potential to go even further.
Just two weeks are left in the Armstrong volleyball regular season, and the Pirates are chasing a Peach Belt Conference title, a fourth consecutive bid into the NCAA Championships—but also the hopes of an unbeaten season, something unheard of in volleyball circles.
This weekend, the Pirates host Montevallo and Augusta State in Peach Belt matches here on campus in an attempt to set yet another new record—breaking that 29-match winning streak set by the 1999 edition of Armstrong volleyball. After that, the sky's the limit for Armstrong volleyball.
