National Champs! Women’s Tennis Captures Trophy
(May 13, 2013) Armstrong’s No. 2-ranked women’s tennis team claimed its eighth NCAA Division II-leading national championship on Saturday at the Surprise Racquet & Tennis Club in Surprise, Ariz., with a 5-2 win over No. 3 BYU Hawaii.
The Pirates (30-1) successfully defended their 2012 title by knocking off the Seasiders (30-2), who they also downed in last season’s match. The two DII women’s tennis powerhouses came into the championship match holding seven national titles apiece and it was the seventh time in each program’s history that the two titans had met in the National Championship match.
The women have won five of the last six NCAA Division II National Championships, collecting crowns in 1995, 1996, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012 and this season.
Armstrong’s No. 2-ranked and defending national champion men’s tennis team came in second on Saturday as top-ranked and unbeaten Barry University took the 2013 NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis National Championship with a 5-4 score in Surprise Saturday morning.
The Bucs (29-0) won their second national championship while handing the Pirates (27-2) their first loss in a national championship match.
Despite the loss, the men have successfully captured three NCAA Division II National Championships in six seasons, as well as winning 174 of 180 matches in those six seasons.
