Introducing... Captain George!
After nearly two months of speculation and anticipation, Armstrong’s mascot finally has a name, and a seaworthy one at that: Captain George. The name was revealed at the 2012 Celebrate Armstrong Day, in front of a cheering crowd of students, faculty and staff. Captain George is a nod to history, named after George Armstrong, the university’s namesake whose house became Armstrong’s first campus.
Captain George was among three finalists in the university- and community-wide naming contest and won over “Geechee,” another nod to history, and “Savvy,” evocative of Savannah. Over 600 votes were cast during the contest. Captain George’s identity is now complete as he rallies the Armstrong Pirates and university spirit throughout the year.
