Armstrong Coach Captures National Honors


On the eve of national championships in Louisville, Ky., Armstrong head tennis coach Simon Earnshaw and some of his star players received high praise and honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

Earnshaw was named the Division II Women’s Tennis National Coach of the Year by the ITA, marking his fourth career ITA National Coach of the Year Award. He earned the women’s tennis honor previously in 2004, 2006 and 2009. Leading a young squad with only one senior to an undefeated record and a spot in the NCAA Championship Round of 16, Earnshaw has also been named Conference Coach of the Year for the sixth consecutive season and the ITA Southeast Region Coach of the Year 2012 for both men’s and women’s tennis.

Players from both teams also received top honors. Senior Kathleen Henry won the Southeast Region ITA/Arthur Ashe Jr. Award for Sportsmanship and Leadership, and freshman Clara Perez won Southeast Region Rookie of the Year Award.

On the No. 1-ranked men’s side, sophomore Georgi Rumenov was named the ITA Division II National Player to Watch, while freshman Sven Lalic was named the ITA Division II Rookie of the Year. Teammate Mikk Irdoja was named the Southeast Region Senior of the Year.

Under the steady leadership of Earnshaw, Armstrong’s No. 3-ranked women’s and No. 1-ranked men’s tennis teams head into the national championships already big winners. Go Pirates!
