"AASU has high academic standards and provides a good education if you're willing to work for it.""--Amber-Kay
Proud Member of AASU Class of 2013
Major: Rehabilitation Science
Why I love AASU: There are many different opportunities to get involved. Every interest that I have, I have been able to pursue here.
Favorite Pirate experience: A potluck dinner with friends we had before my first Thanksgiving break and the feeling that I had found a second family at AASU.
Best advice: Live on campus because you will get valuable life experiences. College is a time to find out who you are. Don't expect to be the same person when you leave as when you first arrive.
"I like helping people," Amber-Kay said. "There is a lot of hurt in this world."
During her first summer at AASU, she had the opportunity to conduct breast cancer research under the guidance of Dr. George Shields, dean of the College of Science and Technology. Amber-Kay was one of a handful of students selected for the paid research position as part of a National Science Foundation grant awarded to AASU.
During her middle and high school years, she showed that she is serious about her academic success. As an entering freshman at AASU, Amber earned an A in an Honors chemistry class.
"I push myself," she said.
Raised in Woodstock, GA, Amber-Kay is getting a kick from the challenges she has found here.
"AASU has high academic standards and provides a good education if you're willing to work for it," she said.
There is something else Amber wants you to know: "I love the Hispanic culture and language."
In high school, she took a trip to Guatemala — with a church group — and is planning a study abroad trip to Spain in her junior year. At AASU, she enjoys practicing her Spanish with her Latino friends.
And she has also found fellowship here. She is involved with the Baptist Campus Ministry and with a national Christian group and attends weekly Bible study meetings.
"Every interest that I have, I have been able to pursue at AASU," Amber said.

Helping Others Inside and Out
Amber-Kay Barnes wants to help people be well inside and out. As a rehabilitation science major, she is focusing on a career in physical or occupational therapy.
