Dr. Clarke Stuart ("Stu") Worthington, 1930-2012, Professor of Psychology Emeritus, died peacefully with his family at his side on January 21, 2012 in Hickory, North Carolina.
After serving in the United States Air Force, Dr. Worthington earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Arizona in 1956, a master's degree from Northern Illinois University in 1964, and a doctorate from Emory University in 1968. He accepted a position as professor of psychology at Armstrong Atlantic University in Savannah, Georgia, and served as the Head of the Psychology Department until his retirement in 1992.
Dr. Worthington is remembered by former students and colleagues alike as a faculty member who was dedicated to teaching and mentoring students, maintaining rigorous academic standards, and instilling in all with whom he worked an appreciation and love for the discipline of psychology. The Psychology Department has longed recognized Dr. Worthington's dedication to academic excellence through its annual "Dr. Stu Worthington Award for Academic Achievement" to a graduating senior.
Today's Psychology Department faculty are proud to continue Dr. Worthington's work in teaching, mentoring, and upholding high academic standards.
