Two Members of the Chemistry Program Attend the POGIL Southeastern Workshop
Ms. Suzanne Carpenter and Dr. Lea Padgett, chemistry, attended the POGIL Workshop held in July 2012 at Guilford College, Greensboro, NC. This meeting was designed to allow attendees of all levels of POGIL interest the opportunity to learn and share about POGIL projects within the region. Multiple tracks included workshops for those who need an introduction to POGIL, as well as more advanced sessions for attendees of intermediate and expert levels. In addition, there were many sessions that allowed for networking and presentations about POGIL related projects.
POGIL uses guided inquiry – a learning cycle of exploration, concept invention and application is the basis for many of the carefully designed materials that students use to guide them to construct new knowledge. POGIL is a student-centered strategy; students work in small groups with individual roles to ensure that all students are fully engaged in the learning process. The chemistry program has added many guided inquiry activities to its courses in the past few years including adaptations in general chemistry, organic, analytical and physical chemistry courses.
