Dr. Will Lynch (chemistry) presents paper at BCCE 2012
Dr. Will Lynch (chemistry) presented the outcomes of the National Science Foundation funded project on infusing green chemistry principles into general chemistry at the Biennial Conference on Chemical Education (BCCE) on August 1, 2012 in State College Pennsylvania. The presentation, titled “General Chemistry Laboratory, Green Chemistry Modules to Improve Student Success” focused on improving general chemistry student engagement using green chemistry modules in the general chemistry laboratory. The modules are presented in a guided inquiry format to improve commitment and performance of undergraduate students in general chemistry by introducing students to green chemical principles in the laboratory experience. The experiments are based on environmentally relevant topics and each includes one or more of the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry. During the course of the project, success rate has improved 2%, ACS exam outcomes have increased by 20%. In general chemistry II, the rate of students who are unsuccessful in the course has diminished by 47% and the GPA has improved by 0.2.
