Darien Harper, Armstrong senior chemistry major, participates in NSF-REU program

Darien Haper travelled to Colby College in Waterville, ME to work with Dr. Jeff Katz  this summer.  Dr. Katz is part of a National Science Foundation-Research Experience for Undergraduates (NSF-REU)grant which supplies support for summer research students to come and work with Dr. Katz during the summer.  Darien's research consisted of
synthesizing oxycalixarenes with a focus on acetylene activated nucleophellic aromatic substitution. His specific project
included synthesizing new oxycalixarenes and presenting them at symposiums. The first symposium presentation,  was at the University of Washington. After the first day of presentations, he attended the five day 43rd National Organic Chemistry Symposium. The second symposium was at the University of San Diego, where he presented
his successful synthesis of two target oxacalixarenes. Darien presented the results of his work to the Department of Chemistry and Physics during a seminar titled "New Bounds in Oxycalixarene Synthesis with Acetylene Activated Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution Reactions".   Congratulations Darien!!!
