Dr. Lea Padgett and Dr. Cliff Padgett, along with undergraduate chemistry major Marie Priest have published a paper in the Journal of Chemical Education. The paper, published in the May 5, 2011 issue of the Journal is titled "Demonstrating the Temperature Dependence of Density via Construction of a Galilean Thermometer"and found on pages 983–985. The paper describes a novel method for the construction of a Galilean thermometer from common chemistry glassware. Students in a first-semester physical chemistry (thermodynamics) class can construct the Galilean thermometer as an investigation of the thermal expansivity of liquids and the temperature dependence of density.
