Chemistry & Physics

On July 14, the Department of Chemistry and Physics was privileged to have two international scientists visit the department and present lectures on their research work. 

One of the visitors, Mr. Markku Häkkinen from Finland is recognized as one of the world’s experts on the identification of wild bananas and is a long time collaborator of Dr. Richard Wallace (Chemistry and Physics).  Mr. Häkkinen, who recently retired from the University of Helsinki, spoke on the topic “Current Status of Wild Musaceae (banana) Species”. 

The other visitor, Professor Houbin Chen, is the department head in the Horticultural Department at South China Agricultural University, located in Guangzhou China.   Professor Chen’s is one of the leading scientists in China in the area of lychee (litchi) and longan research.  Professor Chen spoke on the topic “Recent Developments in Litchi and Longan Research”.  Both visitors were in Savannah having returned from the 2011 Rare Fruit Conference held in Homestead, FL the previous week.
