Master of Arts in Teaching in Middle Grades Education

with initial certification
The degree program in middle grades education prepares teachers who can address the academic, social, and emotional development of students in grades four through eight. The students will study the development of curriculum and pedagogy, key theorists that influence curriculum, pedagogy, instructional strategies, and classroom management skills.  Students are required to specialize in two teaching fields with emphasis given to cross-disciplinary studies.

Career Opportunities

Upon completion of this degree, students are eligible to earn teacher certification for the State of Georgia and the ability to teach in the State of Georgia in both public and private schools. Our graduates are employed in Chatham County as well as surrounding counties, in other parts of the state, and nationally.

Program Features

We expect our students to master the use of technology in the classroom, and this mastery will be demonstrated throughout most of the pedagogy courses required in this program.

An active Student Georgia Association of Educators (SGAE) and a Collegiate Middle Level Association chapter offer excellent opportunities for involvement in a professional education organization.

Course of Study

The program of study is a total of 33 course hours with a required semester internship.  Many of the courses require field study to help in preparation for internship.  Students must have a minimum of 15 hours credit in two content areas (language arts, Science, mathematics, social studies).
