MALPS Program

Master of Arts in Liberal & Professional Studies (MALPS)*

with tracks in Communication Studies, Gender and Women's Studies, International Studies, and Leadership Studies

Armstrong Atlantic's master's degree in Liberal and Professional Studies (MALPS) is for working professionals and mature college graduates who desire both personal enrichment and professional development through an innovative, interdisciplinary graduate program. At the core of the program are four courses that focus on the values, research strategies, communication skills, and critical thinking skills required for personal growth and career advancement. In addition, students elect to follow one of four tracks based on their interests and goals. MALPS combines classical liberal education with professional skills training that culminates in a comprehensive project.

Communication Studies
For those who seek professional advancement through the application of communication concepts and theories to practical work-related problems.

Gender and Women's Studies
For those interested in re-interpreting existing data and perspectives on women and gender through interdisciplinary approaches to culture, society, social movements, and the arts.

International Studies
For those who seek a deeper understanding of various regions in our increasingly interconnected world and of international issues that affect the development of public policies and the global economy.

Leadership Studies
For those with the desire to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to think strategically, manage change, communicate a vision, empower others, and advance in their professions.

Program Features

Because the MALPS program is interdisciplinary, our students have the opportunity to take courses with professors across campus, enriching their capabilities for creative problem solving and critical thorough exposure to different modes of thinking. All students in the program will have opportunities to apply their knowledge and extend their professional experience through off-campus internships and guided projects.

Course of Study

The program of study consists of 30 graduate semester hours (10 courses), with at least 12 graduate hours in one of the specialized content areas (communication studies, gender and women's studies, international studies, leadership studies). Students will formulate their individual plans of study with their major advisors. At least 50 percent of the classes must be at the 7000 to 8000 level. The program includes a comprehensive Master's level project.

*We regret to inform you that the Master of Arts in Liberal and Professional Studies program is currently not accepting new students.
