2012 Winners Announced
U.S. Congressional High School Art Awards at Armstrong
Savannah, GA – Armstrong AMT announced the award winners for An Artistic Discovery 2012, the United States Congressional High School Art Exhibition for Georgia’s First and Twelfth Congressional Districts at an awards ceremony in the Armstrong Fine Arts Gallery. Armstrong recognized the nearly 100 talented young artists hailing from throughout both U.S. Congressional Districts.
Darcy Melton of Savannah Arts Academy and Elizabeth Buchner of Islands High School each received the highest honor, the Congressional Art Award, for her respective Congressional District. Melton will represent Congressman John Barrow’s 12th District with her drawing titled Where Do I Begin, and Buchner will represent Congressman Jack Kingston’s 1st District with her drawing, ICU.
Each of these young artists will have her winning entry on display as a part of a National Art Exhibition of high school students’ work in the corridor leading to the United States Capitol in Washington D.C. for one year commencing this May.
Steve Schetski is Melton’s art instructor at Savannah Arts Academy. Julie Hodge is Buchner’s art instructor at Islands High School.
Ms. Marisa Lilje, draughtswoman and printmaker currently teaching at Veritas Academy, served as juror for the 2012 show. Lilje received her masters degree in figurative drawing from the New York Academy of Art in Manhattan and her bachelors degree in printmaking & drawing from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio.
High school students from all schools within the two Congressional Districts were eligible to submit artwork to this exhibition, which is a highly selective juried exhibition held annually on the Armstrong campus. Out of the 169 entries submitted from students representing 14 schools, 99 works were accepted into the show.
