2011 Winners Announced
U.S. Congressional High School Art Awards at Armstrong
Savannah, GA – The Armstrong Atlantic State University Department of Art, Music, & Theatre (AMT) announces the award winners for An Artistic Discovery 2011, the United States Congressional High School Art Exhibition for Georgia’s First and Twelfth Congressional Districts in the Armstrong Fine Arts Gallery. Armstrong will hold an awards presentation ceremony on Sunday, February 20th at 2:45 p.m. in its Fine Arts Gallery. Admission is free.
Shauna Fannin of Savannah Arts Academy and Alton Guyton of Bradwell Institute each received the highest honor, the Congressional Art Award, for her/his respective Congressional District. Fannin will represent Congressman John Barrow’s 12th District with her scratchboard drawing titled Summer Magic, and Guyton will represent Congressman Jack Kingston’s 1st District with his pencil on paper work, Unknown Location. Congressmen Kingston and Barrow have been invited to attend the awards presentation ceremony.
Each of these two young artists will have the winning entry on display as a part of a National Art Exhibition of high school students’ work in the corridor leading to the United States Capitol in Washington D.C. for one year commencing this May.
Steve Schetski is Fannin’s art instructor at Savannah Arts Academy. Joanne Rempell is Guyton’s art instructor at Bradwell Institute. Ms. Emily Gomez, assistant professor of photography at Georgia College and State University served as juror for the 2011 show.
High school students from all schools within the two Congressional Districts were eligible to submit artwork to this exhibition, which is a highly selective juried exhibition held annually on the Armstrong campus. Out of the 160 entries submitted from students representing 16 schools, 114 works were accepted into the show.
