About this event:
Demonstrating the transcendent power of visual art, AMT presents From Under the Southern Cross: the People and Patterns of Argentina, a student international art exhibition inspired by study-abroad experiences in Argentina that includes artwork by Armstrong students, faculty, and Argentinean indigineous craftspeople.
Artists displaying work in this exhibition will talk briefly about the inspiration for their art during the exhibition’s closing gallery reception that begins at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, October 3rd where light refreshments will be provided and where silent auction bidding will close on the work created and donated for the exhibit by Argentinean artisans. All are invited. Admission is free and open to the public.
Under the Southern Cross: Patterns and People of Argentina is a special collaborative project shaped by a Summer 2014 study abroad experience when Armstrong faculty, Rachel Green and Barbara Bruno lead a group of ten students to experience the art and culture of Argentina from the dual perspective of art and anthropology.
Senior art student, Marisa Stewart talks about how her work reflects her experience in Argentina, “As the trip progressed, I began noticing simple, but indescribable things: A cluster of city lights glimpsed briefly through a window, a giant steel flower reflecting the sun setting on Buenos Aires, alien constellations viewed from horseback. I collected these moments as I travelled, knowing that I would eventually try to recreate them but conceding that no one would ever really understand their significance unless they experienced it for themselves.”
