Armstrong Name Modification Main Menu
After receiving a positive response from a statistically validated survey of Armstrong faculty, staff, students, alumni and community leaders, the university decided to seek approval from the Board of Regents for a name change from Armstrong Atlantic State University to Armstrong State University.
On April 16, 2014, the University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents voted earlier to allow Armstrong Atlantic State University to shorten its name to Armstrong State University.
In the request for the change, Armstrong officials noted that dropping the word “Atlantic” from the university’s name will help minimize confusion and create a stronger brand for Armstrong. The name modification will be effective in the new fiscal year, which begins July 1, 2014.
The university has convened a task force to develop a strategy to implement the name change this summer. Most of the university’s signage, athletic uniforms and collateral materials already have the name “Armstrong,” rather than “Armstrong Atlantic.”
What’s in a name? Everything!
The new name, Armstrong State University, will help us attract new students, establish additional external partnerships and encourage additional fundraising.
We’ve always been Armstrong. The Armstrong name dates back to the university’s founding in 1935 and is near and dear to the hearts of university students and alumni across the country.
However, to prospective students and others less familiar with the university, the word “Atlantic” in our name is confusing. Many people mistakenly think Armstrong’s name is Armstrong Atlanta State University. This confusion limits our ability to clearly brand Armstrong as a successful part of the University System of Georgia, with thriving campuses in Savannah and Hinesville.
It's not unusual for colleges and universities to change their names as they evolve. Armstrong needs a more streamlined name that is easier to remember and reflects our history as well as who we are today.
With more than 7,100 students, we’re proud to be the college of choice for residents across Georgia and throughout the country. We also serve as a key workforce development resource in Georgia, contributing to all sectors of the economy, from education to healthcare.
Start Strong. Finish Strong. Armstrong.
