Bachelor of Science in Biology

Biology is the scientific exploration of the vast and diverse world of living organisms, and this exploration grows as we make more and more advances in areas as diverse as molecules and landscapes. Biologists study how we may continue to fit into the complex ecology of our world, and also consider ethical implications of our actions, which is immediately relevant to the ways we live worldwide.

The Bachelor of Science in Biology prepares students for a wide variety of careers, further study in graduate programs in the discipline or admittance to professional schools in the health sciences.

Career Opportunities

Students who complete a biology degree have developed a breadth of knowledge in the biological sciences and a strong foundation in math and chemistry. Coupled with the skills and knowledge gained from Armstrong Atlantic State University's general education courses, the scientific expertise developed by biology majors allows them to choose careers in the following:

AASU biology graduates are very competitive for admission to graduate and professional programs of study. Successful applicants must have a very good academic record, experience with the chosen field of study (internships and/or research), and close working relationships with faculty who can write letters of recommendation on their behalf. Similarly, students who seek immediate employment should have developed a thorough understanding of their field of interest and have a strong academic record.

Program Features

Our labs are spacious and are fully equipped with modern instrumentation that fully supports the curriculum. Also, because class sizes are small, students and faculty have great interaction in labs and on frequent field trips. Internship options in research, applied biology, medical professions and environmental education are available in labs, local hospitals and in physician, veterinary and dental offices. The department houses an active chapter of Beta Beta Beta, the biology honor society and the Biology Club, a student organization that provides service programs and other extra-curricular opportunities.

Course of Study

All biology majors must complete at least 47 semester hours of credit in biology courses numbered 3000 or above. In addition, general chemistry, organic chemistry and elementary statistics are required. Students should work closely with their academic advisor to select electives that allow them to tailor the biology major to meet their desired educational and career goals.
