ATLANTA (AP) - The state Board of Regents has named a Georgia Southern University administrator as the next president of Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah.

Linda Bleicken has been the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Georgia Southern in Statesboro since 2005. She is expected to take office July 1.

Bleicken replaces President Thomas Z. Jones, who retires this year after nine years at the helm of the 18,000-student university. She began her career at Georgia Southern in 1990 as a professor in the management program.

She got her bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. from Georgia State University in Atlanta.

"I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Linda Bleicken during my ten years at Georgia Southern University. She has done an extraordinary job as provost and vice president of academic affairs and has been instrumental in the success of our University. Dr. Bleicken has the strong leadership and visionary skills needed to lead a growing university. Armstrong Atlantic State University and the University System of Georgia have made an excellent choice. Georgia Southern University will miss Dr. Bleicken. We wish her every success as she assumes her new responsibilities. "
