Environmental & Safety


The Office of the Environmental Services and Safety Coordinator is responsible for many aspects of the campus environment. Under the general umbrella of Plant Operations, this includes responsibility for life safety issues, hazardous waste disposal, job safety training and environmental regulatory compliance.
 

Service Contract Administration

Custodial: Custodial operations at Armstrong are a contracted service administered through this office. Armstrong was a leader in the practice of contracting this type of service.  The Custodial Contractor is required to meet standards of experience in a college or university setting, as well as a record of long-term commitment to the industry.  This contractor will meet established cleaning standards drawn from The Association of Higher Education Facilities Office "Custodial Staffing Guidelines for Educational Facilities." These guidelines are used in developing standards and levels of cleanliness in all campus buildings. 

Custodial Requests should be addressed to the Custodial Contractor's Office at 912.344.3397. Their office hours are 8:00am until 5:00pm.


Pest Control:
 Armstrong has  licensed pest control service providers for monthly interior and structural pest management. State law prohibits Armstrong Plant Operations' staff from providing interior pest control treatments. As a state agency, Armstrong is subject to the laws established in 1997 for "Pesticide or Hazardous Chemical Usage in Certain Areas." This requires a posted notice for all state buildings which you will find in all campus buildings. Exterior pest control is provided by members of Plant Operations Grounds crew who are licensed through the Georgia Department of Agriculture. They are subject to annual training necessary for license renewal.


Hazardous Waste Disposal:
Armstrong is listed with the Georgia Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) as a conditionally exempt small quantity generator. This signifies that Armstrong disposes of less than 220 lbs of regulated waste per month. In order to accomplish this goal Armstrong recycles many forms of hazardous waste. Items include fluorescent light tubes, recycling of used photographic fluid and computer monitors. We maintain contact with several regulated companies for the express purpose of disposal/recycling of these materials. Armstrong uses companies that incinerate chemical hazardous waste, as opposed to landfill disposal. The largest amount of hazardous waste generated each month is that of biohazardous or medical waste. It is removed biweekly through a contracted service agreement.
