Associate Chief Accountant in the Enforcement Division of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission
William Scarborough has been employed by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in Washington DC for over 20 years. During that time, Scarborough has been promoted to assistant chief accountant and ultimately to associate chief accountant in the Division of Enforcement. Throughout the course of his career, he has received five Director Awards, the Chairman’s Award for Excellence, and more than a dozen “Special Act” awards for outstanding work. During his tenure, he has been involved with financial fraud investigations that have returned over $100 million to harmed investors.
Prior to coming to the SEC, Scarborough was a former senior manager with an international accounting firm in Atlanta, Ga. and the CFO of a private company.
Scarborough received a Master of Professional Accountancy and a Master of Taxation degree from Georgia State University. He graduated magna cum laude with both degrees. He has successfully passed five professional examinations in accounting and obtained the many professional certifications. He is an active member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Washington DC Society of Certified Public Accountants, Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, Institute of Internal Auditors, Institute of Management Accountants, and the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts. Scarborough is currently attending an ABA approved law school in Washington D.C. to obtain a Juris Doctorate degree while working full-time at the SEC.
