Assistant Commissioner, Georgia Department of Labor, Retired
After Spencer Hoynes earned his degree in management and marketing from Armstrong in 1970, he began his career with the Georgia Department of Labor at their Savannah office.
In 1975, Hoynes was transferred to Atlanta and worked in a variety of management and leadership positions as he rose through the ranks of the State Labor Department. He served on several joint federal and state committees within the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics and Employment and Training Administration and was officially designated as the Cooperating Representative for the State of Georgia with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Additionally, he served on the board of directors of his credit union and as president of his homeowner’s association.
Hoynes retired from the State Labor Department in June 1991 as Assistant Commissioner. He was the 1999 recipient of the Vladimir Chavrid Award - an annual award by the National Association of State Workforce Agencies that honors excellence in the field of Labor Market Information and Employment Security operations research.
Hoynes was elected to serve on the Armstrong Alumni Board of Directors in 2001 where he served two three-year terms. During his second term, he was elected Alumni Board Secretary, followed by the Treasurer, Vice President and Alumni Association President in 2007. He completed his Alumni Board service in June of this year.
