As director of the First-Year Experience program, Dr.
Bruce is responsible for developing, coordinating, implementing, managing and promoting the university's First-Year Experience program, including the articulation of a vision and goals for student learning and development in the first year, and the creation of academic and co-curricular programs in support of first-year students.

Bruce comes to Armstrong from Lynchburg College, where he had been director of the college’s First Year Program since 2002. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and a master of education degree from Auburn University and a doctorate in education leadership with an emphasis on higher education from the University of Virginia.

Following 5 years active duty in the Navy as a submarine warfare officer, Bruce has continued in the Reserves, currently holding the rank of Commander.  He will retire from the reserves at the end of this year.  Following active duty, Bruce worked for the Proctor & Gamble Company for 4 years as a product development engineer. In addition, Bruce completed the Master Brewer program, two semesters of graduate-level course work in brewing and fermentation science at the University of California-Davis, and has worked professionally as a head brewer and plant manager at several micro-breweries and brew pubs.
