First-Year Learning Communities

First-Year Learning Communities (FLCs) are a superb way for new students to transition from their high school experience to the college environment.  In fact, students who participate in learning communities earn higher grades their first year and are more likely to become college sophomores.

• Learning Community classes are small – typically 24 students per class;
• Students enjoy opportunities to make friends and form study groups;
• They offer an enriched academic experience because your professor will either teach both classes, or will work closely with the other professor to blend the classes in meaningful ways to enhance your learning
• You'll sign up for First Class when you sign up for Navigate.

Types of Learning Communities

First Class Learning Communities

You will enroll in a three credit core curriculum course such as English Composition or Introductory Psychology, and a one credit first-year seminar course.

In the seminar class you will learn about our campus and all that it has to offer, you will learn how to approach your college studies to maximize your learning, and you will begin to develop the research and analytical skills that will be necessary for your academic success this year and beyond.  Because you will be one of a group of approximately 24 First-Class students enrolled in these courses together, you will quickly get to know other students as you begin your college studies at Armstrong.

Living-Learning Communities

In a Living-Learning Community, students with similar interests and goals have the opportunity to live together in a residential hall.  To learn more about what we are offering next year, please click on the link above.
