Description: In some criminal, civil, and security matters, language itself can be evidence. This course provides the student with the skills needed to identify the various types of computational linguistic evidence for investigative purposes.  The student will use web-based linguistic tools for the investigation of threatening communications.

Assessment of Steganography Tools

Description: Steganography is the ability to hide the existence of a message or data within another file, known as a carrier. Digital images, as well as audio and video files, offer a rich environment for hiding virtually unlimited types of data. This course is designed to provide the student with an introduction to the field of steganography, how the technology works, and the dangers its use presents. The increased use of steganography poses a unique challenge to law enforcement and intelligence. Students will become familiar with the currently available steganography tools, as well as the tools and methods used to investigate these types of cases.

Legal Concepts Related to Technology Investigations

 
Description: Since the events of September 11, 2001, the legal issues concerning the conduct of criminal and national security investigations have drastically changed. This course will focus on the USA PATRIOT Act, FISA, ECPA and PPA and their applicability to technology and computer crime investigations.
