IT Services would like to inform campus about a serious new ransomware, CryptoLocker. Please read the message below and make sure you have updated your Antivirus system, do not open links or files you are unsure of, and we recommend keeping a back up of your important data. CryptoLocker is especially dangerous because of its infection rate and the fact that this virus is mutating with new code regularly.
Issue/Concern: CryptoLocker is a ransomware program that was released in the beginning of September 2013 that targets all versions of Windows including Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8. CrypoLocker is a virus that is delivered as a fake email designed to mimic the look of a legitimate business or a fake FedEx or UPS tracking notice. By opening the malicious link or downloading the zip file inside of the email, CryptoLocker ransomware is installed on the user's computer. The ransomware will encrypt certain files and then display a CyptoLocker payment program that prompts the user to pay a ransom within a specified time in order to decrypt the files or the user will lose access to them.
-Do NOT open any links or email attachments that you are unsure of and are not expecting from your known contacts.
-If you are on an Armstrong computer, Armstrong's McAfee Antivirus system is setup in such a way that your DAT files are being updated as soon as the central system received updates from McAfee. Laptop users who have not connected to the Armstrong network to allow these updates to happen will receive their updates directly from the McAfee website (this is predefined in your campus configuration). IT Services recommends backing up your data regularly with Atempo LiveBackup or an external hard drive.
-If you are using your personal computer, please review your personal Anti-virus software and make sure the software is updated to the most current version. IT Services recommends backing up your data regularly on an external hard drive.
If your computer becomes infected: The US Computer Emergency Readiness Team and Department of Homeland Security encourages victims to report the incident to the FBI at the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Also, you should contact the IT Services Helpdesk as soon as possible at(912) 344-2518 or email@example.com
