Turnitin

Turnitin is a plagiarism detection tool that students and professors may use to look for signs of plagiarism in a students' written work. Armstrong instructors can begin using Turnitin.

To begin, instructors are required to set up an account, create a class, and set student limits and manage student limits. The student then is required to set up an account, enroll in class and submit an assignment. The file size is limited to 20mb. Files with password protection, encrypted hidden system files or read only files cannot be uploaded. Only one file per student per assignment can be submitted.

System Requirements

For Windows machines

  • 1.5GHz or faster processor
  • Microsoft® Windows®7, Windows® XP with Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista® with Service Pack 1
  • Firefox 3.0+, Internet Explorer 7.0+, Chrome 4+ or Safari 4+
  • Internet browser set to allow all cookies from Turnitin.com
  • Some features such as GradeMark require Javascript to be enabled
  • 1GB (XP) or 2GB (Vista) of RAM or more recommended
  • 1,024x768 display or higher recommended
  • Broadband Internet connection is recommended

For Mac OS machines

  • Mac OS X v10.4.11+
  • Firefox 3.0+, Chrome 4+ or Safari 4+
  • Internet browser set to allow all cookies from Turnitin.com

Instructions for Faculty to Create Account

Instructors can create their own profiles but will need to get the Account ID and Join Password from IT Services before beginning the process. New users: Create a user profile

  • Go to Turnitin http://turnitin.com/
  • Under Email, click Create account.
  • Under Create a New Account, select instructor. Enter the Account ID and Join password. (Contact IT Services for this information.)
  • Continue to fill out the form with your name and e-mail address. Complete the password and security section. Select a secret question and answer it. Read through the user agreement and, if you agree, click I agree – create profile.
  • Click the button to Log in to Turnitin.

Create a Class

  • Log in to Turnitin.
  • Click the add a class button to create a class.
  • Enter a class name and an enrollment password. NOTE:The enrollment password is the password your students will use to enroll in your class. Pick a password that is easy for your students to remember and that contains all lowercase letters.
  • Enter the end date as the last day of your classes.
  • Click Submit.

Create an Assignment

  • Within your class click on the New Assignment button to create an assignment.
  • To create an assignment, enter an assignment title and choose a start and due date for the assignment. Students will be able to submit their papers to the assignment starting on the start date and until the due date passes. Click submit to add the assignment to your class homepage.
  • Students can submit papers and the instructors can also submit electronic papers.
  • Your assignment inbox shows submitted papers with their Originality Reports. To open the Originality Report for the paper you just submitted, click the report icon.
  • All the primary sources found to match the paper submission are in the sidebar to the right of the paper contents.

Faculty Guidelines for Using Turnitin - Notice to Students:

If you choose to use Turnitin for your classes, you must notify your students.

  • For courses delivered in Armstrong's Electronic Classroom (Desire2Learn), place the notice in your syllabus and an announcement in the class announcements section.
  • For face-to-face courses, place the notice in your syllabus and verbally inform students of the service during the first class meeting.

Instructions for Student to Create Account

Instructors should give students their Turnitin class ID and class enrollment password in order to use Turnitin for that class. New users: Create a user profile

Returning Users

Returning Users: Add your current class to your profile.

  • Log in to Turnitin with your e-mail address and the personal login password you created.
  • Click enroll in class, and enter your instructor’s Turnitin class ID and class enrollment password. (Your instructor should supply this information.)

Submit a Paper

Submit a paper with these simple steps.

  • Log in to Turnitin with your e-mail address and the personal login password you created.
  • Once you login you will see a list of your classes. Click your class title to see the list of assignments associated with it.
  • In the assignment list look for the title of your assignment. To the right of the title click the Submit icon.
  • Where you see choose a paper submission method, leave the default setting single file upload.
  • Enter submission title, i.e., the title of your paper.
  • To upload a file, click on the Browse button, find the paper on your disk or computer, then click Upload.
  • Be sure it is the paper you want to send, then click submit.
