Job Hunters Group Offers Advice, Support for Alumni Seeking Work

(March 27, 2013) Armstrong’s new Job Hunters Group offers six free events designed to help alumni and graduating seniors in their job search. Starting April 23, these Tuesday evening sessions explore a variety of topics and are led by other alumni who are experts in their fields. All of the events, which will also be available online, are free. Participants may pick and choose which sessions are most useful to their needs.

The topics for the sessions include how to use LinkedIn, job search etiquette, applying for federal jobs, new trends in interviewing, how personality affects your search, and evaluating your opportunities.

Graduate Jermaine Whirl (MEd ’10), who helped conceive the series, believes that young alumni and students can all benefit by being better informed about what it takes to get a job today. “Workforce development is critically important for the economic stability of our region,” says Whirl, who also participates in the Savannah Economic Development Authority’s Step Up program. “For our graduates, however, the economy is much more personal. These are well-educated, dedicated individuals. We want to help them navigate any obstacles that might keep them from finding good employment.”

Each session will include a brief seminar led by an alumni expert followed by questions and answers. Participants will also be able to share their experiences and concerns in their job search. “Our goal is for participants to feel comfortable with each other, to be able to help and support each other throughout the process,” says Liz Wilson, Armstrong’s director of career services.

The series will take place every other Tuesday through July 2. It is co-sponsored by the Alumni Association, Career Services, Campus Union Board and Graduate Students Coordinating Council.
