First Year: First Class

What is First Class?

First Class is an initiative offering learning communities designed specifically for Armstrong’s first-year students to help them strengthen their abilities to answer questions, solve problems, and advocate for themselves. How?

All first-year students will sign up for learning communities—groups of 20-24 students taking a common set of classes. Each First Class learning community consists of a core course paired with a one-credit-hour first-year seminar. In each learning community, students will get to know their classmates, while at the same time learning common sets of skills:
  • Study skills
  • Time management
  • Knowledge of campus resources
  • Clear communications skills
  • Information literacy skills

Students will apply the skills they learn in the first-year seminar to the concepts they’re learning in the core curriculum. As a result, they will be better prepared to solve problems independently, allowing them to be more successful in college and
beyond.
