First-Year Experience Resource Center
The FYE Resource Center aims to enhance the success of first-year students by increasing student learning, achievement, and engagement in curricular and co-curricular opportunities.
First-year students face a critical transition as they move into their new academic, social and personal university lives. If you’re a first-year student at Armstrong Atlantic, we can help you learn how to get better connected to your professors and university staff; make connections among classes, campus events and personal experiences; think like a college student; and take advantage of Armstrong Atlantic’s diverse cultural opportunities.
Get started with our campus-wide Common Read Program for Fall 2009.
The Resource Center provides comprehensive, intentional, and collaborative initiatives that assist students in accomplishing their potential in their first year and beyond. We also aim to support the larger university in delivering an overall generative undergraduate experience. This is discussed by Chickering and Gamson in “The Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education.” The seven principles are as follows:
1. Encourage contact among students and faculty.
2. Develop reciprocity and cooperation among students.
3. Encourage active learning.
4. Give prompt feedback.
5. Emphasize time on task.
6. Communicate high expectations.
7. Respect diverse talents and ways of learning.
To achieve these ends, the Resource Center collaborates with university-wide programs, departments, staff and faculty to deliver first-year specific programs involving initiatives such as recruitment, orientation, first-year seminars, first-year learning communities, service learning, leadership and supplemental instruction.
The FYE Resource Center, established in May of 2009, is supported by the First-Year Experience Task Force, which is composed of university-wide administrators, staff, and faculty, and works closely with the Office of Academic Advisement and Orientation.
