Student Earns Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of Georgia Scholarship
(Nov. 13, 2013) The Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of Georgia Foundation awarded a scholarship to Armstrong freshman Zachary Vandeventer during a ceremony on Armstrong’s campus on October 30, 2013.
“I do have quite a bit of gratitude for having received this scholarship,” said Vandeventer. “Now, because of this scholarship, my tuition is paid off with flying colors.”
In attendance to recognize Zachary were Fred Kitchens, the executive director of the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of Georgia Foundation; Michael Kooden, general manager of United Distributors, Inc.; KC Honeyman, assistant director, government relations at Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of Georgia; Chris Peters of the Savannah Distributing Company; and Bill Kelso, vice president of Advancement for Armstrong.
Created in 1964, the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of Georgia Foundation has provided 1,048 scholarships totaling over $1.3 million for students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend college. The foundation awards full-tuition scholarships to non-research universities and colleges in the University System of Georgia.
This particular scholarship, in honor of Chris Peters’ father John Peters, Jr., is one of three memorial scholarships awarded by the foundation.
“During his lifetime, John was one of the most committed to the industry,” said Kitchens.
John Peters, Jr. attended Armstrong prior to graduating from the University of Georgia, and founded Release Marine in Savannah and John A. Peters Insurance. He later went on to work in the family wholesale beverage business. He was the owner of the Savannah Distributing Co., chairman of the board of the Savannah Distributing Co., a member of the board of the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of Georgia, and the board of the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of America.
“I’m very, very pleased that you’re a part of our program,” said Kitchens to Zachary. “Use it well, and repay us by repaying your school.”
