Recent College of Education Graduates Win Grants
(Nov. 21, 2012) Two graduates of Armstrong’s College of Education have been honored both for their academic performance while still in school and their excellence as teachers in the classroom. Darin Edgecomb and Lisa Lombardi, both spring 2012 Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Middle Grades Education graduates, have received the Georgia Power New Teacher Assistance Grant. Lombardi teaches mathematics at Godley Station k-8 school in Pooler, Ga., and Edgecomb teaches seventh grade at Lewis Frazier Middle School in Liberty County, Ga.
The Georgia Power program grants $1,000 for classroom supplies to some of the state’s best and brightest new teachers. The aim of the program is to encourage promising new teachers by helping them purchase additional materials and supplies for use in their classroom. The teacher nominations are submitted to Georgia Power by the 19 Georgia public colleges and universities that have a school of education. To be eligible for the grant, candidates had to have been in the top 25% of their class academically, be a first-year teacher employed by a public school in Georgia, and demonstrate a high aptitude for teaching.
“I am continually encouraged by the classroom talent that comes from education programs at Armstrong,” said College of Education Dean Patricia Wachholz. “We are proud of these award recipients who are working very hard to be the best that they can be for their students, their colleagues, and their schools. And, we appreciate Georgia Power’s support. Programs like the New Teacher Assistance Grant let teachers know that their contributions are appreciated and encourage them to stay committed to the profession.”
The awards were presented at school board meetings in Chatham and Liberty counties by Wayne Grimes, Georgia Power Energy Education Coordinator.
