New Book Traces Armstrong’s 75-Year History
(September 18, 2010) Janet Stone, Armstrong professor of history emerita and university historian, has published “From the Mansion to the University: A History of Armstrong Atlantic State University 1935-2010.”
The 400-page hardcover book was researched over several years and includes material starting with the founding of the college in 1935 to the day that current president Linda M. Bleicken took office in July 1, 2009. Illustrated with images of Armstrong across the decades, the book includes 13 chapters and an epilogue. Stone, who joined Armstrong in 1975, worked under three Armstrong presidents and one interim president. She retired in 2007.
“The book is not just about the institutional history, but it dips down into personal lives and lots of Savannah history,” said Stone.
The author will kickoff Armstrong’s 2010-2011 Robert I. Strozier Faculty Lecture Series at 12:10 p.m., Friday, September 24 in University Hall 156 on the Armstrong campus. Her presentation, “Celebrating 75 Years of Armstrong’s History” will draw from her book and will focus on the history of Armstrong and higher education in Savannah.
The book will be available starting Friday, September 24 at the Armstrong Atlantic State University Bookstore. It can be purchased online or by calling 912.344.2603. It will also be available at E. Shaver Bookseller on Madison Square in Savannah.
Stone will host a book signing at E. Shaver Bookseller from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, October 23. To reserve a copy, call 912.234.7257.
