Each One Teach One Receives Excellence in Education Award
(July 30, 2014) — Armstrong’s Each One Teach One program was recently awarded an Excellence in Education certificate from the Savannah-Chatham County Board of Public Education. The program received special recognition at the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools Board of Education meeting in July.
The Each One Teach One program allows undergraduate engineering students from Armstrong to help children at Spencer Elementary School develop math and problem-solving skills. The project culminates with the engineering students developing projects that teach the younger students important math, science and engineering concepts.
Dr. Cameron Coates, professor of Engineering and interim Engineering Studies program coordinator, and June Erskine, Each One Teach One program supervisor and director of field experiences in the College of Education, accepted the award on Armstrong’s behalf. Spencer Elementary School’s principal Andrea Williams and assistant principal Charles Wooten were also present.
“It’s truly an honor to receive this award,” Coates said. “The Each One Teach One program helps promote academic success for our local elementary school children, particularly in STEM areas. It also provides a service component to the engineering curriculum. This is essential, as our engineering graduates will need to be more attuned to social matters and community needs to succeed in their profession.”
The Each One Teach One program, which matches college mentors with elementary school children, helps increase awareness among inner city elementary or middle school students of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) careers. The program also develops student appreciation and motivation to excel in STEM fields and encourages mentor relationships between college students and elementary school students.
Coates obtained funding from the Georgia Space Grant Consortium to develop the program. Armstrong has led the Each One Teach One initiative at Spencer Elementary School for the past four years.
