Armstrong to Host Georgia Science Bowl on February 22
(Feb. 4, 2014) – Armstrong Atlantic State University will host the 2014 Georgia Science Bowl on Saturday, February 22. This event, which is free and open to the public, will attract qualifying high school and middle school teams from across the state.
Three local teams – Savannah Country Day School, Savannah Christian Preparatory School and DeRenne Middle School – will compete in the state science bowl at Armstrong. Twelve high school teams and four middle school teams will participate in the 2014 event.
The competition will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the second floor of the Science Center on the Armstrong campus, 11935 Abercorn Street. The Jeopardy-style science and math competition matches teams of four students each. Faculty and students from the Armstrong departments of Chemistry and Physics, Biology and Mathematics, along with university alumni, will serve as volunteers for the event. The Georgia Science Bowl has been held at Armstrong for eight consecutive years.
The winning high school and middle school teams from Georgia will compete in the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. on April 24-28. Regional winners receive an all-expense paid trip to compete for the national title. In addition to the academic competition, students will have the opportunity to attend presentations by well-known scientists on current topics in math and the sciences.
The U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl is a nationwide academic competition that tests students’ knowledge in all areas of science. DOE launched its National Science Bowl competition in 1991 to encourage high school students to excel in science and math and to pursue careers in those fields. The National Science Bowl’s high school competition now involves approximately 9,000 students.
