Armstrong Tennis Player Competes in Davis Cup
(Feb. 2, 2013) Armstrong freshman men's tennis player Jaan Kononov represented his native country of Estonia in the 2013 Davis Cup in Dublin, Ireland.
Kononov played in the Group II singles lineup for Estonia against Ireland in the first day of action on Friday, Feb. 1. A true freshman from Talinn, Estonia, Kononov faced Ireland's James McGee, ranked No. 342 in the world, and on Sunday, Feb. 3, he faced Sam Barry, ranked No. 604 in the world, in the second round of singles action.
This is the first time that Kononov has represented his country in the Davis Cup, but he is not the first Armstrong men's tennis player to do so. ITA Hall-of-Famer Paul Haarhuis, who played at Armstrong from 1985-86, represented the Netherlands for 16 years over his career, and Mikk Irodja, who played at Armstrong from 2010-12, represented Estonia in Davis Cup action from 2005-08 prior to joining the Pirates, compiling a 6-3 overall record in singles and doubles.
