Armstrong Students LEARN About Criminal Justice Careers

(November, 9, 2011) The Armstrong Atlantic State University Police Department is launching LEARN, a pilot program that can help Armstrong students better understand the criminal justice system and the professional opportunities available for students considering criminal justice as a career path.

The Law Enforcement at Armstrong Resource Network (LEARN) will run through spring 2012 and is open to all students. It will provide a practical understanding of specific aspects of the criminal justice field through different programs, including field trips, guest lecturers and practical exercises. Also planned are visits to a courtroom to witness a trial, a correction institution to learn about the workings of the prison system, and the State Capitol, where students can learn about the legislative process.

Guest speakers from criminal justice agencies will speak on various topics, including counterfeit currency, the value of animals in the field of police work and fundamentals of traditional and digital crime scenes. Students will have the opportunity to network with criminal justice professionals and speakers, participate in monthly session and solve crimes in mock crime scenes.

A kickoff will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 10 with a crime scene scavenger hunt on the Armstrong campus. Students will be faced with a mock homicide scene and must discover clues that lead around campus and, eventually, to the “perpetrator.” The “crime scene” will begin on the brick pathway in front of Windward Commons and end at Armstrong Police Headquarters. The process will demonstrate the importance of details and the powers of observation.
