Armstrong Partners with the U.S. Air Force to Provide Degree Opportunities
(Nov. 13, 2013) – Armstrong Atlantic State University is partnering with the U.S. Air Force to help active-duty, National Guard and reserve personnel pursue their education through the General Education Mobile (GEM) program. Armstrong is the first University System of Georgia institution and the only four-year college in Georgia to join the GEM program.
GEM is a landmark partnership between the Community College of the Air Force and civilian academic institutions, offering a 15 semester-hour cluster of freshman and sophomore-level courses. Armstrong offers both online and traditional classes in each of the five required general education areas—mathematics, written communication, oral communication, social sciences and humanities. Armstrong’s online classes provide the flexibility military members often need to complete their associate’s degree in Applied Science.
“The option of taking classes through an in-state school will appeal to many Air Force personnel stationed here in Georgia and will particularly benefit those members of the Air National Guard who want to continue on to higher degrees right here at Armstrong,” said Pete Hoffman, director of Armstrong’s Liberty Center in Hinesville.
By awarding credit for experience gained during training and in partnership with military-friendly universities like Armstrong, the Community College of the Air Force is able to offer military students an associate’s degree.
“GEM provides an outstanding educational opportunity for today’s airmen,” Hoffman added. “These degrees help enhance careers and provide a solid foundation for further college studies.”
For military students like Andrea Tabacchi, a member of the U.S. Air Guard, the GEM program offers a convenient way to continue her education.
“The Air Force puts a lot of emphasis on education, so it’s exciting to see this partnership with Armstrong become a reality,” she said. “Armstrong truly is a military-friendly university, and now it will be even more streamlined for those students serving in the Air Force. We’re used to seeing Army soldiers on campus, but it will be nice to have more Air Force students as well.”
The Community College of the Air Force is a worldwide multi-campus community college established to meet the educational needs of Air Force enlisted personnel. CCAF is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools/Commission on Colleges (SACSCC) as an occupational educational institution.
