Armstrong Names Director of Athletics
(June 7, 2011) Armstrong Atlantic State University officials announced today that Lisa M. Sweany, senior associate athletics director at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) in Michigan, has been named athletics director for Pirate Athletics effective July 18.
“Lisa’s extensive experience with a premier Division II athletics program will serve her well as she takes charge of Pirate Athletics,” said Armstrong President Linda M. Bleicken. “The search committee was very impressed with the excellent work Lisa has done to establish strong links between athletics and the campus at Grand Valley State University. We are very pleased to have her join our campus in July, and we look forward to having her work with our coaches, athletics personnel, student-athletes and further build support for our program among our constituents and supporters throughout the region.”
Sweany brings to Armstrong extensive experience in NCAA Division II athletics, including more than 10 years with the premiere Division II program at GVSU. Since being named senior associate athletics director in 2007, she has been responsible for budget, personnel and facilities management. Her duties have included direct supervision of seven coaches, overseeing game and event operations, as well as management of all athletics personnel. In addition, she coordinated all aspects of compliance and eligibility for more than 500 student athletes.
She actively researched and implemented a plan to offer women’s lacrosse as GVSU’s 20th varsity sport. She has served on the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference Executive Council, the Irwin Club Advisory Board and the Intercollegiate Athletics Advisory Board.
Sweany also served as tournament director for NCAA Division II regional and national events hosted by the university, including Men’s Golf Nationals, Women’s Golf Nationals, Volleyball Nationals and Football Playoffs.
Prior to joining GVSU, she served at Tri-State University in Angola, Indiana, starting in 1995 as athletics facilities director. During her five-year stint at Tri-State, she served in various capacities of increasing responsibility, including assistant basketball coach, head coach of softball and associate athletics director, a positioned she was named to in March 1995.
Sweany is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. From 2010, she served as chair of the NCAA Midwest Regional for Softball, helping to oversee rankings in the region. Since 2008, she has served as second vice president and convention planning chair for the Collegiate Event and Facility Management Association, where she was a founding board member.
She holds a master’s degree in physical education with a concentration in sports management from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana and a bachelor’s degree with honors in business administration with a concentration in accounting from Tri-State University in Angola, Indiana.
