Armstrong Honors Multicultural Students’ Academic Achievements
(April 18, 2011) The Armstrong Atlantic State University Office of Multicultural Affairs honored more than 700 minority students during the 2011 Multicultural Academic Achievement Scholars (MACAS) Awards in April.
The program’s goal is to highlight minority students who achieve academic success, recognizing students who maintain a 3.0 GPA or above while completing 12 semester hours. Three designations of achievement—Academic Honor (3.0-3.49), Academic Achievement (3.5-3.99) and Academic Excellence (4.0)—are used to honor students.
“This event represents an opportunity to recognize students’ achievements at a larger scale and highlight the importance that we place at Armstrong on academic performance and achievement,” said Michael Snowden, director of Armstrong’s Office of Multicultural Affairs.
Shanara Brown, a sophomore pre-nursing major, reflected on the impact that the event had on her family: “I have been encouraging my husband, mother, and sisters (who were all in attendance) to go back to school, and to put Armstrong at the top of their list. My sons were excited for me and they told me that I have a "cool" school. I told them that this could be their school one day. It was very motivational.”
Another honoree, Kendra Johnson, a senior majoring in health sciences, added: “I had a great experience at the MACAS ceremony,” she said. “I feel so accomplished and encouraged to continue working to achieve my goals.
As a group, the MACAS honorees represent not only diverse ethnic origins, but also various countries from around the world. Armstrong’s total student enrollment includes 23.6 percent African American, 4.7 percent Latino, 3.4 percent Asian/Pacific Islander and 3.3 multiracial. International students represent more than 80 countries around the world.
