Armstrong Holds Open House for M.O.V.E. Initiative
(Aug. 29, 2012) The university hosted a successful open house reception for the new Men of Vision and Excellence (M.O.V.E.) initiative on Aug. 19 at the Student Union.
Armstrong received support from the University System of Georgia’s African-American Male Initiative earlier this year to launch the new M.O.V.E. mentoring and leadership program on campus. Organized by the Office of Multicultural Affairs and First-Year Experience, M.O.V.E. unites Armstrong faculty, staff and students to foster success among African-American male undergraduates.
The open house event’s “It Takes A Village!” theme helped build an atmosphere of community and created a connection with various university organizations to encourage students to get involved with this exciting new program. The Open House attracted a number of first-year students and was attended by Armstrong’s provost, several vice presidents and M.O.V.E. graduate assistants.
“M.O.V.E is such an important new initiative because the goal is to retain and matriculate African-American first-year students,” said Nashia C. Whittenburg, director of Armstrong’s Office of Multicultural Affairs. “The program provides additional tutorial, mentor and peer-to-peer support with the goal of supporting, retaining and eventually matriculating the participants.”
The program creates a campus-wide support system and holds workshops on time management, study strategies and resume writing, among others. Not only are the students encouraged by mentors, but their parents also have opportunities to get involved through on-campus receptions, community service projects and dedicated workshops.
Through the M.O.V.E. program, students are supported academically with regular tutorials and through mentoring from a graduate assistant who meets with each participant to discuss academic performance. This innovative program also encourages interactive experiences outside of the classroom including guest speakers, conference opportunities and social outings.
