Armstrong Hires Georj Lewis as Vice President for Student Affairs


(September 20, 2013) Armstrong recently hired accomplished higher education administrator Georj Lewis as the university’s vice president for student affairs. In his new position, Lewis is responsible for providing leadership, advancing strategic goals at Armstrong, collaborating on student initiatives and ensuring compliance with federal mandates. He brings more than 14 years of higher education leadership experience to his new position, as well as a genuine passion for working with students.

“My leadership style is transformational and purpose-focused,” Lewis said. “My trademark is an authentic enthusiasm for working with students, developing staff and building partnerships. I pride myself on being accessible, visible, transparent and connected to students.”

Before joining Armstrong, Lewis served as the vice chancellor for student affairs at Indiana University Northwest in Gary, Ind., where he managed a $4.2 million divisional budget, advised the chancellor on student-related concerns, administered the campus student conduct system and developed an Enrollment Management Plan which contributed to the largest enrollment in campus history.

He also served as the dean of students at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Ga., for nine years, where he managed a $2 million budget, planned a wide range of student programs and implemented a leadership program for campus student leaders. Before being promoted to dean of students, he served as the director of the Multicultural Student Center at Georgia Southern University.

Earlier in his career, Lewis worked as the director of the Multicultural Programs Office and the assistant director/coordinator of minority recruitment for the admissions office at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in Edinboro, Penn.

Originally from Connellsville, Penn., Lewis earned an Ed.D. in Leadership/Higher Education Administration from Georgia Southern University in 2007. He also completed an M.A. in Counseling/Student Personnel Services and a B.S. in Accounting from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.

A dedicated community volunteer, Lewis previously served on the board of directors for Hearts and Hands Clinic, Inc. and the Boys and Girls Club in Statesboro, Ga. In Erie, Penn., he was an active member of the Booker T. Washington Center board of directors and the YMCA Black Achievers Program Scholarship Committee.

Lewis is a member of National Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA), Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi. He recently relocated to Savannah from Merrillville, Ind.
