Armstrong Establishes B.J. Ford Endowed Scholarship
(June 8, 2012) The Armstrong Atlantic State University Foundation, Inc., in conjunction with Armstrong’s athletic department has received a gift to establish the B.J. Ford endowed scholarship to benefit future female student-athletes wishing to study and participate in intercollegiate athletics for the Pirates.
The endowment will provide an annual scholarship to a female student-athlete at Armstrong who competes for one of the Pirates' six women's intercollegiate athletic teams: volleyball, soccer, basketball, tennis, golf or softball.
The scholarship was established in honor of Betty Jane "B.J." Ford, the first head coach of women's basketball and softball at Armstrong. Ford coached the women's basketball team from its first season of competition in 1976-77 for 10 seasons, winning 121 games, and coached softball during the same time period. She was an inaugural member of the Armstrong Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995 and was instrumental in the development of female intercollegiate athletics at the university.
Speaking on behalf of all the former student-athletes who had the privilege to play for Coach Ford, Cindy Hambrick explained the establishment of the scholarship. “It is our goal to honor Coach Ford and the impact she had on shaping women's athletics at Armstrong. By doing so in this way, we can 'pay forward' the opportunity she gave each of us. Armstrong is a great place to be and we are excited about helping future athletes discover it. We would like to thank those who have already contributed to the scholarship fund and welcome all support.”
“These former student-athletes stepping up to honor coach B.J. Ford is a testament to the leadership, opportunity and commitment Coach Ford had in the development of these young ladies," Armstrong Athletic Director Lisa Sweany said. "By creating this scholarship these former student-athletes will leave a legacy in B.J.'s name for years to come that will help many young women attend Armstrong and compete as Pirates."
