Armstrong Employees Honored as Scholars by the USG
(April 28, 2011) Armstrong Atlantic State University employees Jane Wong and Corine Ackerson-Jones have met the requirements to be named scholars of the Executive Leadership Institute of the University System of Georgia (USG). They were honored, along with 63 other scholars from colleges and universities across the USG, during an April ceremony in Atlanta.
The Executive Leadership Institute was implemented in 2009 to strengthen the future leadership of the USG. It is consistent with the Regents’ strategic goal six, “Increasing Efficiency, Working as a System,” and builds on initial work done in 2006-2007 by a task force on training and professional development. The institute includes a comprehensive 100-hour development program conducted by experts in leadership. It targets leaders in such positions as executive director, chair, dean and vice president. Participants enhance skills to prepare for potential high-level advancement within the system. Designed under the guidance of USG Chancellor Erroll B. Davis Jr., and with significant input from executive leaders from each institution, the institute develops leadership capabilities in critical competency areas, including strategy, execution, collaboration and engagement.
“It really helped me appreciate the skills needed for effective leadership and gave me a sense of my current strengths and areas I need to further develop,” said Wong, who has served as head of psychology at Armstrong since 2002.
Wong and Ackerson-Jones were part of the second class of scholars to emerge since the establishment of the institute.
Prior to joining Armstrong, Wong served as coordinator of graduate studies in psychology at the University of Northern Iowa-Cedar Falls, where, from 1988, she taught both graduate and undergraduate courses, primarily in the area of clinical psychology. Under her leadership, Armstrong’s Department of Psychology developed a bachelor’s of science, in addition to the bachelor’s of arts in psychology that it had traditionally offered. In December 2008, Armstrong’s Department of Psychology became the first program in the State of Georgia to offer a pre-approved course sequence for eligibility to take the Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst Examination. Wong holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and a master’s in psychology from Northern Illinois University. She earned a bachelor’s in psychology and chemistry from Loyola University.
Ackerson-Jones joined Armstrong in 2006 as an academic advisor and is now coordinator of recruitment and retention for the College of Health Professions. She serves in the areas of recruiting, academic advising and student academic support. As the 2010-2011 chair of the Staff Advisory Council, Ackerson-Jones has lent her leadership skills to advancing the interest of staff, working with the administration through a process of shared governance. She received her bachelor’s and a master’s in education from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. She is a member of Thankful Missionary Baptist Church in Savannah, where she serves in several capacities and has been a community advisor with the Student Leadership Program. She is member of the King Tisdale Cottage Foundation, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and a board member of the Black Alumni Society at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.
“Being an ELI scholar involved a lot of time and hard work but it was well worth it,” Ackerson-Jones said. “I had the opportunity to job shadow a great administrator, form strong bonds with a great group of mentors, collaborate with other USG institution faculty and staff members, and hone my leadership skills. The experience can only serve to strengthen me both personally and professionally.”
