Armstrong Earns NASPA Excellence Award


(March 5, 2013) Armstrong was recently selected as a Silver Recipient for the 2013 Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA) Excellence Awards. The award honors the university’s eStudent Affairs program, designed for nontraditional students and online learning students.

The NASPA Excellence Award recognizes Armstrong’s achievement in transforming higher education through outstanding programs, innovative services, and effective administration in the Off-Campus, Commuter, Nontraditional, Graduate, Professional, and Related Category. University representatives will be honored in March at the 2013 NASPA Annual Conference in Orlando.

“This award recognizes Armstrong’s ongoing commitment to supporting online learning,” said Kristen Betts, director of Armstrong’s Office of Online & Blended Learning. “We strive to create an environment where traditional and nontraditional students can excel. We want to make sure that all of our students are able to be a part of the Armstrong Experience.”

Armstrong’s Division of Student Affairs partnered with the Division of Academic Affairs, Information Technology Services, and the Office of Online & Blended Learning to develop eStudent Affairs. Through this collaborative partnership, Armstrong has designed a supportive, engaging, and nurturing learning environment through innovative technological and co-curricular initiatives.

“eStudent Affairs programs and initiatives enable our nontraditional student population the opportunity to become actively involved in ‘campus’ events, join eStudent organizations, meet with student support services through eOffices, and build their resumes without having to live on campus,” noted Carey Adams, Armstrong’s provost and vice president for academic affairs.

NASPA Excellence Award winners were selected by meeting the following criteria: having a positive impact on student learning, demonstrating success in addressing student needs and/or critical campus issues, collaboration with academic affairs and other departments, originality and creativity, effective use of technology and other resources, innovative practical use of research and/or assessment, and linking to learning outcomes and relevance of institutional mission.

“We are proud to promote the innovative work taking place on Armstrong’s campus, and encourage institutions to follow suit and join the movement,” said NASPA president Kevin Kruger.
