Armstrong Collaborates with Georgia Southern to Host Annual Meeting
(April 3, 2014) — The Armstrong Atlantic State University Honors Program, in conjunction with the Georgia Southern University Honors Program, recently welcomed 600 students and faculty members from honors colleges and programs from all over the southeastern United States for the Southern Regional Honors Council annual meeting. The event took place March 27-29 at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront.
This year’s conference, “Making Waves: Traditional and Innovation Honors,” explored the ways in which honors education has changed education and showcased outstanding undergraduate research along with best practices and new innovations in honors programming.
The conference kicked off on March 27 with an exploration of Savannah through the City as Text program. In the evening, participants took to the Savannah River for a dinnertime riverboat cruise to historic Fort Jackson, where their arrival was marked with the firing of the fort’s cannons.
A luncheon featuring keynote speaker Dr. Darin Van Tassell, Georgia Southern’s associate professor of International Studies and Political Science, served as a highlight of the conference. Dr. Van Tassell, a 1989 Georgia Southern University Bells Honors Program graduate, delivered a lecture titled “The Art of Joe DiMaggio: Or Why There is Nothing Natural about Being a University Honors Student.”
Armstrong’s Honors Program offers talented, motivated students across disciplines a chance to take creative, small classes in the place of general education requirements. It also provides the opportunity to apply intellectual curiosity to independent projects or special major classes.
Classroom experiences in the Honors Program are enhanced by extracurricular opportunities such as field trips, community service projects, study-abroad programs, social gatherings, and trips to regional and national conferences where students present the results of their Honors experiences.
