Armstrong Awarded Financial Literacy Grant
(July 21, 2011) Armstrong Atlantic State University’s Office of Financial Aid has been awarded a $4,000 financial literacy grant by Higher One, Inc. to provide financial literacy education to students in Armstrong’s First Year Experience Program (FYE) and the Hispanic Outreach and Leadership at Armstrong (HOLA) program.
The funds will support 10 workshops to be presented through Armstrong’s Peer Financial Counseling (PFC) program with assistance from Higher One. The PFC program is a student-led group that educates other students on financial literacy. Student counselors give financial information covering topics such as budgeting, credit cards, student loans, credit reports and identity theft. The workshops are designed to help students retain the material through application exercises and acquire skills in budgeting, establishing financial priorities and preventing bad credit.
“This grant will allow the Office of Financial Aid to further educate our incoming freshmen on matters related to critical areas of personal finance that they need to understand in order to have success as students,” said Lee Ann Kirkland, Armstrong director of financial aid.
The funding will also provide five $500 scholarships for student counselors and coordinators who lead the workshops and accumulate the most points for their participation in the program.
Some 2,370 students are expected to benefit from the workshops presented throughout October that will include games, prizes and food. Students will also learn about financial tools that can help them make educated decisions about money matters.
Higher One chose Armstrong’s grant proposal from among 80 others from colleges and universities across the country. Amber Taylor, financial aid counselor, assisted in the writing of the grant proposal.
