Armstrong Appoints Vice President of Student Affairs
(June 29, 2011) Dr. Keith Betts has been appointed vice president of student affairs at Armstrong Atlantic State University, effective July 1. Most recently, he served as vice president for student services and dean of students at Buena Vista University in Iowa.
Vice President Betts will oversee all aspects of the Division of Student Affairs, including housing and residence life, Student Union and activities, career services, disability services, multicultural affairs, student health center and university counseling services, among others.
“Keith brings an exceptionally strong background in student services to Armstrong,” said Armstrong President Linda Bleicken. “He joins us at an important time in our history when we have more than 1,400 students living on campus and we continue to expand services and programs specifically designed for residential students. His skills and experience will serve him well as he takes on this leadership position at the university.”
Betts’ career in higher education spans almost three decades and includes 14 years of executive leadership in the areas of student development, student services, recruitment and retention, athletics, and institutional advancement. As vice president for student services at Buena Vista since 2006, his areas of special focus included finalizing a five-year strategic plan, increasing enrollment and growing institutional diversity. He had oversight for several areas, including retention and student success, residence life and housing, career services, health and wellness, athletics, campus security, conferencing and counseling services. Some of his key accomplishments included developing a five-year plan to improve and expand campus housing, increasing the number of recruited student-athletes and establishing the offices of Parent Services, Outdoor Recreation and Adventure and International Student Services.
Prior to joining Buena Vista, Betts served in positions of increasing responsibility at The George Washington University (GWU) starting in 1985. These positions included athletics and alumni relations before moving to his last post at GWU as senior executive director in the Division of Student and Academic Support Services. There he worked directly with the senior vice president to establish short- and long-range goals and help manage more than 500 full-time personnel.
In addition to his executive and leadership experience, Betts also has served as adjunct faculty member at Buena Vista, Drexel University and GWU. He is currently a peer reviewer for the Journal of Online Learning and Technology and presents at national conferences. A native of Sherwood Forest, England, he holds a Doctor of Higher Education Administration and Master of Business Administration from GWU.
