Armstrong Announces New Provost and VPAA


(July 3, 2012) Armstrong announces the appointment of Carey Adams as provost and vice president for academic affairs, effective July 1, 2012.

Adams comes to Armstrong from Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri, where he was dean of the College of Arts and Letters. During his tenure at Missouri State University, he earned numerous awards, including the MSU University Award for Teaching, the MSU College of Arts and Letters Award for Excellence in Teaching and the MSU Graduate College Award for Excellence in MSAS Online Instruction.

“We brought a qualified slate of candidates to campus for interviews, but Dr. Adams stood out for his excellence in communications and administration,” said Armstrong President Linda Bleicken. “He brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and enthusiasm to his position at Armstrong.”

An accomplished educator and administrator, Adams has a Ph.D. in Communication Studies from the University of Kansas, as well as an M.A. in Communication Studies from Baylor University and a B.A. in Communication and Religion from William Jewell College. At Missouri State University, he served as co-chair of the university’s Long-range Planning Steering Committee and was a member of the President’s Commission for Diversity, the University Marketing Task Force and the Community Foundation of the Ozarks’ Arts Programming Sustainability Initiative.

An active community volunteer and communications specialist, Adams has been a member of the Council of Colleges of Arts & Sciences, the International Council of Fine Arts Deans, the American Conference of Academic Deans Communication Association and the International Communication Association.

Adams was hired as a result of the efforts of a dedicated search committee, chaired by Armstrong Dean of the College of Liberal Arts Laura Barrett.
